France deplores arrest of human rights activists in Azerbaijan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French authorities on Wednesday condemned the arrest of Arif Yunus, the husband of a renowned human rights activist in what appears to be an officially-sponsored campaign to clamp down on human rights activities.

"France deplores the placing in pre-trial detention of Arif Yunus," a Foreign Ministry statement said here.

The statement noted that the detainee's wife, Leyla Yunus, was herself arrested on July 30.

"France reiterates its commitment to the respect of human rights and due process," the statement added.

Azerbaijan is also tense because of a smouldering dispute with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory which is held by Armenian separatists but claimed by Azerbaijan.

Clashes over the past week have led to 20 deaths among forces from both sides.
