European markets modestly higher after PMI data, earnings eyed

European stocks rose early Tuesday, following better-than-expected results from BMW and Credit Agricole for the second quarter. Asian stocks and US stock-index fututres rereated.

Markets saw a modesly positive start for the session amid the release of key PMI services data and coporate results from Europe. The Stoxx 600 rising 0.52% to 332.85 as of 03:42 a.m. ET. Gains haven`t gone too far, but most of the groups looked higher this morning, with s hares of health care group leading the rally by 0.80% gain.

Among equity movers, German carmaker BMW rose 2% after posting second-quarter profit that beat forecast. The french lender  Credit Agricole rose 5% after posting better-than-expected earnings, although its reported a drop in second-quarter profit from a year ago.

The economic agenda was quite busy this morning, with PMI data from France, Spain, Germany, the eurozone economies and the UK signaling continued expansion in July.

- Britain`s FTSE 100 index rose 0.38% to 6,702.91

- France`s CAC 40 index rose 0.52% to 4,238.98

- Germany`s DAX 30 index rose 0.57% to 9,205.37

Later today, eurozone retail sales data are released at 05:00 a.m. ET. Retail trade in the eurozone is expected to rise 1.4% year-on-year in June, following a 0.7% increase posted in May. On a month-on-month basis, retail trade is expected to grow 0.5%, after remaining unchanged in May.
