(MENAFN- Arab Times) 160;KUWAIT CITY Aug 4 (KUNA): The Ministry of Health plans to implement strategies to promote infants breastfeeding and to control campaigns to market breast milk alternatives said Dr Nawal Al- Hamad director of the Nutrition and Feeding Department at Ministry of Health on Monday. Natural breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns with right nutrients until the child reaches the age of six month as well as supplementary food feeding for two years which is the recommendation of World Health Organization (WHO) Dr Al- Hamad added in a press statement on occasion of World Breastfeeding Week celebration. The Breastfeeding Week goals include provision of information about Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and how they relate to infants and young children breastfeeding in addition to shedding light on what has been achieved so far in that field she added. Dr Al-Hamad explained that the event draws attention to the need to intensify efforts to encourage support newborns breastfeeding. It also aims in informing youth of both sexes on importance of breastfeeding and its role in the current world. UN scientific committee confirmed the significance of breastfeeding in achieving MDGs which include preventing extreme poverty famine achieving universal primary education promoting gender equality empowering women reducing child mortality improving maternal health and combating AIDS and other diseases while ensuring environmental sustainability as well as developing a global partnership she noted. Save the Children and WHO reports reveal low birth rates and deaths all over the world except in Africa where it has seen the lowest percentage of progress compared to the rest of the world she emphasized. The MDGs in Kuwait have made progress but it's striving to improve through the implementation of specific strategies to raise the importance of breastfeeding and to control the promotion and marketing of breast milk substitutes she added. WHO annually celebrates World Breastfeeding Week during Aug 1- 7 with participation of more than 170 countries around the world in order to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.
