Hollande denounces "inadmissible" Israeli shelling of UN school

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande on Sunday condemned the shelling by Israel of another UN school in the Gaza Strip, calling it "a violation of international law" and urging those responsible be held to account.

Israel has admitted firing in the area of the UN school in Rafah, where at least 10 civilians were killed, several of them children. The UN schools are being used as safe havens for Palestinian refugees fleeing the Israeli onslaught against Gaza which is its fourth week.

Israeli has now hit several UN facilities, causing dozens of deaths among the civilian refugees there. The shelling of UN schools has been denounced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and other UN officials inside and outside of Gaza.

Israel's incessant air, sea and land shelling has killed more than 1,700 Palestinians, the bulk of them civilians and about 25 percent of them children.

"The President of the Republic denounces the inadmissible bombardment of a school managed by the United Nations in Rafah which caused the deaths of at least ten people who had taken refuge there," Hollande's office said in a statement.

"He joins with the Secretary-General of the United Nations to demand that those responsible for this violation of international law answer for their actions," the statement from the French Presidency said.

Hollande reiterated a call for a cease-fire to ease the distress of the civilian population which is now confirmed as tragic, the statement noted.
