Smith is not alone in her views about online commerce, and the statistics about the growth of e-commerce, in general, back her decision. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales Report for the first quarter of 2014, online retail sales in the United States have increased by 15 percent since this time last year.
Additionally, Amazon as an e-commerce platform leads the competition by miles. For example, statista.com's report, "Statistics and Facts About Online Shopping," showed that in the third quarter of 2013, the number of visitors to Amazon was almost four times the number of people who shopped on Target's website, and over five times the number of shoppers who visited Best Buy's website.
Smith adds that her company's first product, men's No show socks, can also sell year-round online.
"Most people think of no show socks as a summer-only sock, which would be true for some of the United States," she says. "But there are areas of the U. S. where people wear them year-round, and that means we can sell our socks year-round."
