Mild tremors wake UAE residents from Eid holiday slumber


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) E NCMS registered an earthquake of magnitude 5.An earthquake that struck off the coast of Kish Island in Iran shook buildings in some parts of the UAE waking up many residents from the Eid holiday slumber early on Wednesday morning.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) in Abu Dhabi said it registered an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale in South Iran 300 kilometres from Abu Dhabi. A mild tremor was felt in different parts of the UAE the NCMS said in a statement issued in the state news agency Wam.

Several Khaleej Times readers sent in messages about the tremor early morning. “I woke up to a slight tremble. Did we just have an earthquake”’ Shefi Abdul wrote.

Another reader Asif Shaikh said: “I immediately woke my family up and we prepared to go out. But the tremors stopped immediately. It was scary.”

“Thankfully I was out in the park for my run when this happened. But I was really worried about the rest of the people in my building as I live in a skyscraper” wrote Christina. Officials at the Dubai Municipality told Khaleej Times the Dubai seismic network under the municipality recorded a moderate earthquake with magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale in southern Iran near Kish Island at 5.32am. As per the record the quake happened 217km northwest of Dubai and 230km north of Abu Dhabi. “The quake was slightly felt by some residents in high-rise buildings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi without any impact on all parts of the UAE ... Its impact will be slight and limited to southern Iran” the municipality stated.

Mohammed Mashroom head of the Survey Department at the municipality said the main shock was recorded clearly and the DM system also recorded its aftershocks that were not felt by residents in the UAE.

“These are related to the collision between the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate which constitute a belt parallel to Zagros Mountain” the official said.

He also reassured that all Dubai buildings had been designed according to the Dubai Seismic Code and these events will not have any effect on them.

Some residents took to social media to express their tremor experiences. “Earthquake tremors in #Dubai right after Fajr. #UAE” tweeted Hamzah Khan. Lauren Doble tweeted: “Earthquake felt in Dubai... My building was shaking back and forth.”

Mazz who uses the handle ‏mazendubai posted in reply to LaurenDoble “oh me too.. i thought i had a headache ..u r the 3rd person on twitter to agree that there was one.” (sic)
