3118 Filipinos register for absentee voting

(MENAFN - Arab News) Total of 3118 Filipinos registered at the Philippine Embassy for the country's overseas absentee voting (OAV) for 2016 between May 7 and July according to Ambassador Ezzedin H. Tago.There were 1398 registrants in May and only 241 registrants in June while the figure spiked to 1479 between July 1 to July 23.The embassy has called on the huge numbers of qualified voters among the 674000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Kingdom to register so that they could exercise their right to vote.The embassy also accepted requests for the transfer of registration records applications for reinstatement in the national registry of overseas voters applications for reactivation of registration records and applications for change of address within the same jurisdiction.The embassy also accepted a total of 136 various related requests to the overseas voting registration.Recently all Filipinos who have transactions at the embassy must go through the process of registration for overseas voting and recapture of biometrics.The embassy also advises Filipinos to allot enough time to execute their transactions as well as register and recapture biometrics.Filipinos in the Eastern Province may register during the consular outreach mission through the Embassy on Wheels (EOW). The registration which began on May 6 will end in October 2015.The Overseas Absentee Voting Act also known as Republic Act No. 9189 is a law in the Philippines passed on Feb. 13 2003 that provides a system for citizens of the Philippines currently residing or working outside the Philippines to vote in an election.
