U.S. Welcomes Election of Iraqi President Urges Gov't Formation

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Shington D.C. July 25 (QNA) - The United States has welcomed the election of Fouad Massoum as Iraq's next president as a "crucial step" ahead of choosing a prime minister and the formation of a new government. "By taking this crucial step the Council of Representatives has demonstrated its commitment to uniting the country according to the constitution and advancing the legitimate rights and aspirations of all Iraq’s communities" State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a press statement. She urged the country's leaders to take the next step in its democratic process and name a prime minister and form a new government. "Only with an inclusive cohesive government that represents all Iraqis can Iraq most effectively and successfully confront the urgent security and humanitarian challenges it faces in the fight against [Islamic State in Iraq and Levant]."
