EU against putting sanctions on Russian energy sector

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU's top energy official Wednesday said he is not in favour of imposing sanctions on energy supplies from Russia.

"I have always argued in favour of the fact that energy supplies from Russia; oil, gas, uranium etc, should not be included in these sanctions," EU Energy Commission Gunther Oettinger told a press conference here today.

EU officials are expected to submit tomorrow, Thursday, a new list of sanctions targeting Russia after the crash of the Malaysian airliner in Eastern Ukraine last week.

The EU imports 25 percent of its energy consumption from Russia.

"We think that now given the need for security in the gas sector because of the situation in Russia and Ukraine we are thinking of more objective and ambitious energy saving targets," he said presenting the European Commission's report on Energy Efficiency.

The EU's efficiency target for 2030 aims at cheaper energy bills for consumers and increased energy security through a reduction of gas and oil imports and a positive impact on the environment.

"I think that it will put Europe again in the cadre of energy efficiency and will certainly reduce our dependence on the importation of fossil fuels for the next years and will allow us to produce energy while being less reliable on importation," noted Oettinger.
