US opposes HRC commission into alleged Israeli war crimes

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US strongly opposed at Wednesday's special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) a draft resolution calling for forming a panel to probe the alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza.

Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State Marie Harf called the draft "the latest in a series of biased anti-Israel actions at the HRC." "We strongly oppose the creation of this kind of mechanism that you spoke about, because it's one-sided. There's no one's looking here at Hamas rockets. No one proposed looking at anything else, other than Israel in this case," stressed Harf to reporters.

"Hamas does have rockets that can reach Ben-Gurion Airport. During current fighting, Hamas rockets have landed north of the airport, although the accuracy of their rockets does remain limited," Harf noted.

"Israel's Iron Dome system, which, as you know, we work very closely with them to develop and fund, has monitored and, with quite a high degree of success, destroyed many of the incoming rockets, which could reach this area as well as other areas," she added.

The US has not yet determined Hamas' anti-aircraft capabilities.

Harf reiterated: "Hamas is a terrorist organization firing rockets indiscriminately with the purpose to kill civilians. Our counterterrorism operations, wherever they are, are taken with a great degree of care to protect civilian life." The US cast the only dissenting vote at the UN HRC vote while the majority of European nations abstained.

Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to continue to travel between Cairo, Jerusalem and Ramallah in hopes of establishing a cease-fire.
