Pakistan- Move against Khan awaiting Senate's verdict


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has referred the privilege motion moved in the Lower House of Parliament this February against Imran Khan for uttering derogatory and scurrilous remarks against senators to Senate Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari for taking action as per rules.

According to sources, the Assembly speaker, in his decision, has asked the Senate chairman to proceed against Imran Khan under the rules.

The said privilege motion against Imran Khan was moved in the Senate on February 13, 2014, held admissible by the Senate and referred to its privileges committee which found it in order and subsequently sent it to the chairman for onward transmission the Assembly speaker to proceed in the matter against Imran Khan as Imran Khan is a member of the National Assembly.

The speaker, in his letter addressed to the Senate chairman said, "Having considered the parliamentary practices and rules the Honourable Chairman Senate may proceed further in the matter in Senate itself as the Senate had already taken cognizance of the matter, therefore, the presiding officer of the other House cannot take cognizance of the matter particularly when its admissibility had already been determined by the Senate and nothing was left to be decided by the Speaker National Assembly."

It is to be mentioned here that after receiving the privilege motion in February, Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari had referred the issue of privilege motion against Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan for his remarks against the Senators to Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for take any decision as per law and Rule of Procedures and also on the basis of established parliamentary practice.

In his letter to the Assembly speaker, the Senate Chairman had stated that, "I am referring the matter to your good self to look into it and to take such action as you may deem appropriate in accordance with the law, rules of procedure and established parliamentary practice."

The Senate chairman had also written that in the Senate sitting on February 17, Senator Zahid Khan on his behalf and on behalf of 30 members of the House sought leave to raise a question of breach of privilege of the House arising out of statement of Imran Khan MNA as reported in the press, wherein he stated that senators are elected on the basis of money and Imran Khan further stated that every person knows the going rate of every member of the Senate.

"Keeping in the view the gravity of matter and arguments solicited by the movers, the deputy chairman, who was occupying the chair at that time held the privilege motion in order and referred it to the privileges committee for consideration and report," he stated in a letter.
