CPM on reform path takes up humanitarian activities

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The district unit of the CPM has sought to change the negative perception about the party by taking to humanitarian activities.

Even before the party beginning the exercise to revise its political and electoral tactics the Kerala unit of the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) has started changing its political line in the state.

The party has initiated the process from the northern district of Kannur that has gained notoriety for political killings. The district unit of the CPM has sought to change the negative perception about the party by taking to humanitarian activities.

The humanitarian mission will begin with pain and palliative care activities. The party has decided to recruit 2000 volunteers for the mission which will be launched on the Krishna Pillai Day on August 9. A permanent palliative care centre is also proposed to be opened in the district on the Azheekodan Commemoration Day.

The party has chosen palliative care to launch its humanitarian mission as the number of people requiring palliative care is rising rapidly with the aging of the population. Studies show that majority of the aged are grappling with multiple diseases including life-threatening and debilitating illnesses. The CPM will provide medical training to the selected volunteers to engage in palliative care. The trained men will visit the homes of every bed-ridden patient and provide treatment they require.

The party is also seriously considering a change in the mode of struggles the party undertakes from time to time to broaden its mass base. Party central committee member E P Jayarajan has kicked off a debate in this regard by asking Students Federation of India (SFI) the student wing of the party to do away with campus strikes that disrupt classes.

He feels that the current mode of strikes affecting studies would alienate the people from the party as students and their parents are more interested in studies these days. He wants the SFI to devise innovative methods of protests in tune with the changing times.

Political observers view the rethinking in the minds of the CPM leaders in the state as a result of steady erosion in its mass base. A major eye opener for the party was the solo protest by a housewife in Trivandrum against blockade of roads by the activists during the solar scam stir.

The recent Lok Sabha poll results show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been robbing its space in the state.
