Air France suspends flights to Israel for security reasons

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French flag-carrier Air France has announced it is suspending flights to Tel Aviv in Israel because of security concerns, "France Info" radio reported.

Air France has taken its lead from several US carriers who said Tuesday they were halting services to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv because of concerns over Hamas rocket attacks and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The suspension by the French airliner is "until further notice", the radio quoted an airline spokesman as saying.

Several Hamas rockets have landed on Tel Aviv since the Israeli launched attacks against the Gaza Strip two weeks ago, attacks that have taken over 600 Palestinian lives, mainly civilians, while Israel has lost two civilians and has had 27 Israeli soldiers killed.

Several thousand Palestinian civilians have been wounded in the brutal pounding of Gaza.

Delta, US, United, Lufthansa and KLM were among airlines that said they were suspending services and one Delta flight to Tel Aviv on Tuesday was diverted to Paris after rocket fragments landed within a mile of the Ben Gurion Airport.

Airlines are particularly nervous of flying in conflict zones after a Malaysia Airlines flight was apparently shot down over eastern Ukraine 10 days ago, with the loss of all 298 on board.
