(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Tuesday root causes of the conflict in Gaza Strip should be solved for good.
The situation in Gaza "is unacceptable," Ban told a joint news
conference with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.
Ban, on a regional tour, that included Kuwait, aimed at helping establish an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, said he has been meeting with leaders of the region in order to end the violence and return to dialogue.
These meetings, he added, aimed at addressing root causes of problems. "We have no time and we don't want to offer expectations. We are working on stopping the violence." Ban, at a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the day, said the military action would not bring stability to Israel.
The UN chief, in his meeting with Hamdallah, said he was in the region to push forward the Egyptian ceasefire initiative to end the violence.
The Israeli air strikes and ground offensive killed more than 600 people in Gaza so far and injured over 3,400 others.
Ban said the root causes of the problem between the Israelis and Palestinians should be addressed.
He said the people of Gaza should be free to move, should have unrestricted access to water and the important need of having hope.
Ban attended a Palestinian government meeting and was briefed about the field and humanitarian developments in Gaza amidst the Israeli bombardments.
Hamdallah, for his part, called on the international community to provide an urgent international protection for the Palestinian people who were subjected to the Israeli "killing and death machine." The prime minister called for the formation of international committees to investigate the Israeli massacres against the Palestinian people.
