Arab Parliament criticizes UNSC's Gaza statement

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President of the Arab Parliament Ahmad Al-Jarwan criticized on Monday the latest UN Security Council statement on the Israeli war on Gaza, saying it does not match events on the ground.

Al-Jarwan, in a statement, said Israeli crimes against Palestinian civilians required a more aggressive intervention from the Security Council which should not "equalize between the victim and aggressor." The official also noted that the statement was disappointing in confronting the "Zionist war" against civilians in Gaza, affirming that the recent massacre in Shuja'iyyah which resulted in killing of hundreds of people, including children was a crime against humanity and all human ethics.

Al-Jarwan mentioned that the Israeli war machine has targeted indiscriminately populated civilian areas, including hospitals filled with doctors and injured people.

The MP called on the international community to immediately intervene and end the massacres.

The UN Security council called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities" in Gaza, based on the return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement, and expressed "serious concern" about the growing number of casualties which reached over 450 deaths and thousands of injuries since the Israeli aggression began on July 8.

Council President Ambassador Eugene Gasana of Rwanda read out "elements" of a press statement in which he said the Council expressed "serious concern" about the escalation of violence in Gaza, and called for the respect of international humanitarian law, including "protection of civilians." The Council also "emphasized the need to improve the humanitarian situation, including through humanitarian presence," and commended the efforts undertaken by Egypt to broker a cease-fire, as well as those of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who is on a mediation mission in the region.
