(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Ooredoo yesterday announced that all mobile calls to Palestine will be free for the next week, in an effort to help people connect with friends and family during the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The international call offer applies to all mobile calls made using international codes 970 and 972 to people in Palestine.
More than 400 people have been killed in Israeli military action in Gaza in recent days, over 3,000 injured and tens of thousands displaced.
Ooredoo has taken the decision to make all calls free in response to customer requests, with people desperate to stay in touch with loved ones in the conflict zone.
The offer applies to all international calls from Qatar, including Hala, Shahry Standard and Shahry Smart Packs customers, and runs until midnight on July 31.
Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani (pictured), CEO, Ooredoo Qatar, said: "We stand with our brothers and sisters in Palestine. We must make every effort to support those suffering and in fear, and we hope this initiative enables people to stay in touch during this frightening time."
Ooredoo has also donated QR1,000,000 to Qatar Charity's humanitarian efforts for Gaza to relieve suffering of people.
Ooredoo has a strong relationship with Palestine, with its company Wataniya Palestine recently launching "We are all Gaza" campaign in cooperation with UNRWA and PCRF to support Gaza.
The campaign enables customers to make donations by SMS from their mobile phone balance to support relief work in Gaza.
To encourage a high response rate, Wataniya Mobile is providing free call minutes for those who donate.
Nawras in Oman has also launched a parallel campaign to encourage employees and customers to donate for the cause.
Meanwhile, Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has provided Palestinian hospitals in the Gaza Strip with emergency medicines as hospitals are suffering acute shortage of medicines and medical supplies in light of the ongoing Israeli aggression.
Qatar Emergency Relief Fund donated QR2m to import medicines for hospitals, including seven essential medicines, totalling 40,300 pharmaceutical packages for emergency services and surgical procedures.
The procurement will contribute to raising the capacity of five major hospitals to respond to the emergency situation and save thousands of people.
The Director of QRC Office in Gaza, Dr Akram Nassar, said these medicines for hospitals will help fill the deficit in important categories and ease suffering of thousands of injured Palestinians.
Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) is planning to send a humanitarian aid convoy to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
Dubbed 'Convoy of the People of Qatar to Gaza', the despatch will contain large quantities of medicines and medical supplies to meet the urgent needs of the hospitals as the number of injured Palestinians is increasing, RAF said in a statement.
The convoy will enter the Strip via Jordan, under the supervision of Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation for Arab and Muslim relief development and cooperation.
