Obama worried over rising deaths in Gaza, sends Kerry to Mideast to seek ceasefire


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President Barack Obama Sunday expressed serious concerns over the growing number of Palestinian civilian deaths in Gaza and loss of Israeli soldiers, saying Secretary of State John Kerry would travel to Cairo soon to seek a ceasefire.

Obama made the remarks during a phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, their second call in three days to discuss the US' condemnation of attacks by Hamas against Israel and reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself.

Obama also, "raised serious concern about the growing number of casualties, including increasing Palestinian civilian deaths in Gaza and the loss of Israeli soldiers," according to a statement from the White House.

Obama told Netanyahu, "Secretary of State John Kerry will soon travel to Cairo to seek an immediate cessation of hostilities based on a return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement." The US underscored that it will, "work closely with Israel and regional partners on implementing an immediate ceasefire, and stressed the need to protect civilians-in Gaza and in Israel."
