Hollande calls Putin to urge cooperation in Malaysia Airlines enquiry

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande spoke Sunday night with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the question of the Malaysian Airlines flight that was apparently shot down close to the Russian-Ukrainian border last Thursday, killing all 298 on board.

Hollande had earlier spoken with the German and British leaders and they agreed to exert pressure on Putin to get him to rein in pro-Russian militias in the crash area and make them cooperate with international inspectors on site.

Failure to get Russian cooperation would likely lead to more sanctions against Moscow after EU meetings on Tuesday.

The French leader told Putin in the conversation that he wanted him "to use all his influence to immediately obtain from the (pro-Russian) Ukrainian separatists that they stop blocking the enquiry (and) the relief efforts and they hand over the black boxes to the competent authorities," Hollande's office said.

Putin was also urged to seek to resolve the critical situation in eastern Ukraine and push for a cease-fire, the release of all hostages and the control of the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Hollande also spoke with Australian and Italian leaders on Sunday.
