(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The armed wing of the Palestinian Hamas group claimed yesterday night that it had kidnapped an Israeli soldier, prompting celebrations in the streets of Gaza City.
"The Israeli soldier Shaul Aaron is in the hands of the Qassam Brigades," a spokesman using the nom-de-guerre Abu Obeida said in a televised address.
The Israeli military said it was checking on the reported capture. Israeli television stations ignored the report in their extended evening programming about the offensive. Ubaida said the capture happened during the same battle in which 13 Israeli soldiers died earlier, near Shejaia.
