French FM urges Gaza ceasefire as urgent

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said here on Saturday a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is an urgent and pressing matter and priority for all parties.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh, Fabius said he will call on Israeli officials, when he visits Tel Aviv later today, to accept a ceasefire in Gaza in order to fend off more escalation.

He said France and Jordan accept the Egyptian ceasefire initiative, but pressure should be exerted on the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to accept the Egyptian document.

Fabius pointed to ongoing Egyptian efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire, while lauding Jordan's support for the Palestinian people and its initiative to receive some injured Palestinians for medical treatment.

He believed that Israel has the right to defend itself while the Palestinians have the right to an independent state.

On his part, the Jordanian foreign minister said all parties should accept the Egyptian ceasefire initiative, but he condemned the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

He said his country was making continuing efforts and contacts with the Egyptian side in order to persuade both Palestinian and Israeli sides to reach a ceasefire.
