Oman's Mansoor finishes last at ISAF youth world championship

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's Mansoor al Mahrooqi concluded his disappointing campaign at the 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Tavira, Portugal on Friday with a lowly finish.

The 15 year old finished at the bottom of the rankings in a field of 57 sailors competing in the Laser Radial event, scoring a total of 401 nett points at the end of nine races.

Mansoor was the only participant from Oman at the worlds that witnessed nearly 150 sailors compete in eight events. In a three-way shootout for the title, Spain's Joel Rodriguez (39 nett points) came out on top following a fourth-place finish on the concluding day.

He edged out Ireland's Seafra Guilfoyle by four points. The Irish racer climbed up to second overall following his win in the last race, while Singapore's Ryan Lo (51 nett points) fell to third place, managing a mere 19th in the final race.

As part of the build-up for the Tavira event, Mansoor had participated in the 2014 Laser Radial Youth Europeans in Aarhus, Denmark from June 26-July 3, where 155 young sailors from across Europe competed for top honours.

The Omani sailor was one of the youngest participants in his class and had also undergone a camp in Tavira ahead of the championship with his two coaches - Abdulaziz al Shidi and Leonardo Santos.
