Kerala CM firm on backing Aranmula airport project

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The severe indictment from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the quashing of environment clearance by the National Green Tribunal has not deterred the Congress-led United Democratic Front government from supporting the controversial private Aranmula airport project.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy informed the State Assembly on Thursday that the government would continue to support India’s first Greenfield airport in the private sector in the hilly district of Pathanamthitta district if the promoters came with an environment-friendly and a legally valid proposal.

Replying to a submission on the issue from M A Baby of the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) Chandy however made it clear that the government would not help the Chennai-based KGS Group in clearing the environmental and legal hurdles.

“It is for the promoters to get necessary legal clearance and government would not go for any appeal against the court orders against the airport. It was the responsibility of the promoters to get legal clearance for the project. If the company comes out with all clearances the government will support the project” he added.
