It might thrill you and shock you. It may even horrify you. The reality of horror movies is such that if not treated well it can end up resembling a comedy. While critics may have their own issues with the genre audiences love their share of thrills. No wonder movies like Evil Dead The Exorcist and Paranormal Activity enjoy their own cult following.

A remake of the 2012 Tamil film of the same name which was well received at the box-office Bollywood 3D horror thriller Pizza comes to the UAE this weekend.

The film revolves around a Pizza delivery boy sent to make a delivery at the home of a family full of dark secrets. How he overcomes this situation with twists and turns forms the crux of the story.

Former Miss India Parvathy Omanakuttan and Akshay Oberoi lead the cast of the film directed by debutant Akshay Akkikeni. Parvathy made her cinematic debut with United Six (2011) and followed it up with a Malayalam and a Tamil film. The duo who were in Dubai on Sunday to promote their release dropped into the Khaleej Times office to give us a heads up on what we can expect from the movie.

Pizza 3 D is a remake of a Tamil movie but is it going to be an exact replica of it

Parvathy: We have kept the story line pretty similar but have tweaked it for the Bollywood audience.

Akshay: This film is not for the conventional Bollywood audience but for those with a heightened sensibility definitely. We just tried to push the envelope a bit. Pizza was a raw indie film; we tried to up it a bit. It is a good story; I do not think we wanted to tamper with the story but to kind of treat it differently.

A lot of horror film makers tend to concentrate on the special effects eerie sound effects and the technology because of which the story and the character become secondary. Where does Pizza fit in

Akshay: Our story is very strong we are very confident of that but definitely sound plays a huge role in any movie particularly a horror-suspense-thriller. Pizza is not really a horror film it’s a suspense thriller and horror is an element within that. Since music does play a role in suspense thrillers we have kept that intact. But the focus is the story. It is as experimental as a film can get in Bollywood.

Parvathy: Everything kind of gels with the story. We have different genres of music but we do not have anything where we are running around the trees and lip-synching. Music does not disconnect you from the story.

Why opt for 3D when the original didn’t have it

Parvathy: We all wanted to showcase our talent that has not been explored. Even the technical team of this film has a rebel streak to them. With reference to 3D we have used the camera that was used for The Hobbit and Transformers. That kind of technology is amazing for a small budget film.

What made you choose the horror genre to make your lead entry into Bollywood

Parvathy: One thing that I have always kept in mind is that I do not want to be tagged as just another model looking glamorous in a film. I am here because I love good movies. The fact is that Indian cinema has so much to offer in terms of talent which we have not really tapped into. We kind of get into a comfort where we feel that “Oh It’s a safe zone to be. So let’s just stick there.” That is something I do not want to do because I was in the safe zone of doing modeling anyways. I wanted to tap that side of me which is risky and by which I can also prove to the audiences that I can act and I am not just a pretty face.

Did you witness any spooky experiences on sets

Parvathy: There have been a couple of incidences. There was this bulb that fell at the exact spot where I was standing during the first day of our shoot. Thankfully somebody called me at the moment and I had taken two steps behind. Everybody was shocked. I got onto the film thinking. “Lets experience something spooky.” And on the first day itself I had that experience and I said “I don’t want anything else happening to me.” It kind of spooked me that there is something around which we should not be messing with.

Shall we assume that both of you are fans of horror films

Akshay: No we are not. I have been dying to say that I am not a horror movie fan. We do not watch the horror films as much as we intent to watch other kinds of cinema.

You do not enjoy being afraid or being scared

Akshay: I enjoy a good horror film. I have enjoyed The Conjuring. I don’t love the fact “Oh it’s a horror film. Let’s watch it.”
