Hundreds of Dubai residents resolve to lose weight to win gold


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubai residents with children rush to register for Your Child in Gold initiative as online registration reaches 9219.

Hundreds of Dubai residents with their children rushed to five major parks in Dubai to register for the recently launched ‘Your Child in Gold’ initiative by the Dubai Municipality as onsite registration started on Tuesday night.



Onsite registration in five locations reached 1362 participants on the first day out of which 219 registered as family including children. Online registration totaled 9219 so far out of which 1391 (15 per cent) are members of 384 families the Municipality said on Wednesday.



Interestingly more than 64 per cent of the people who have registered online for the slimming programme that rewards people with gold are from India where the possession of yellow metal is held in high esteem.



Almost 6000 Indians have registered online to join the campaign the registration of which will continue till July 24. Other nationalities who top the list are Filipinos (more than 1000 people) and Pakistanis (about 600 people).



Hussain Nasser Lootah Director-General of Dubai Municipality officially launched the onsite registration and the weight loss programme in Al Mamzar Beach in the presence of Essa Al Maidour director-general of Dubai Health Authority Ahmed Bin Sulayem executive chairman Dubai Multi Commodities Centre and other senior officials of Dubai Municipality.



Lootah said this is the continuation of last year’s ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative with the same objective to create awareness on the necessity of adopting a healthy lifestyle with special focus on children and families.



“A healthy society can only contribute to the balanced development of our country in tune with the aspirations of our wise leadership” said Lootah.



“We are greatly inspired by the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to launch this initiative and we have great hope to have overwhelming response from the society based on our successful experience last year” he said. Organisers said it is mandatory for participants to register their details online at the website: www.thedmgold.com and carry the printed version to the park where they are visiting for measuring their weight. “It is important for the participants to come with this completed registration form and identity card. Otherwise their weight will be measured and they can’t be enrolled” said one of them. She said several people had to be turned away on the first day since they failed to follow these instructions.



Onsite registration timing is from 9pm to midnight on a daily basis at Al Mamzar Beach jogging track Al Khawaneej jogging track Gate No.3 Safa Park Gate No.2 Zabeel Park Gate No.3 and Al Barsha Park main entrance.



Walid Al Shaibani head of DM club and coordinator of the campaign this year we expect 15000 participants to register since the initiative is aimed at encouraging children and families to participate and educating them on how to address the obesity issue. Bin Sulayem said the DMCC is increasing its contribution to the campaign this year by providing Dh200000 worth of gold with the ultimate goal of raising awareness of the benefits of exercise combined with a healthy diet.



“As Dubai residents strive to make healthier choices during the holy month of Ramadan this campaign offers a novel way for participants to help themselves and hopefully to help motivate others — it’s a win-win situation for everyone” he added.
