(MENAFN- The Peninsula) One Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was killed in unprovoked firing by Pakistan Rangers at Indian positions along the international border in Jammu district yesterday.
Three troopers and four labourers were injured.
"Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing at Pital post of the BSF in Arnia sub-sector of R S Pura sector of the international border in Jammu district today," a BSF source said here.
"Eight people - two junior officers, two constables and four labourers - were injured. One of these, a critically injured trooper identified as constable Sanjay Dhar, has died," he added.
Senior BSF officials have reached the area to take stock of the situation.
The BSF guards the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, while the Line of Control is guarded by the army.
In another incident, separatist guerrillas killed a soldier of the Territorial Army in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
"Militants today shot at Gowhar Ahmad, a soldier of the 162 battalion of the Territorial Army in Laram Gunjipora village of Kulgam district," a police officer said.
He was taken to hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
A police case has been registered.
It was not immediately clear whether the soldier was on leave or on duty.
In Srinagar, seven people were killed yesterday when an army truck collided with a taxi, triggering mob fury.
Police said three of the passengers in the taxi died instantly after the accident near the HMT crossing on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, 10 km from the city centre, Lal Chowk.
Four of six injured taxi passengers, including a woman, succumbed to their injuries later.
"Two passengers are being treated in hospital," a senior police officer said.
A mob gathered at the accident site and damaged the army truck that was part of a convoy on the highway. The protesters stoned police personnel who rushed to the spot.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah offered condolences to the families of the dead.
The army issued a statement regretting the "tragic incident". Police have registered a case.
Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has called a shutdown today in the Kashmir Valley against the accident and the continuing Israeli air strikes in Gaza.
