A police corporal has been charged in the Court of First Instance with stealing Dh5070 from a Bangladeshi worker’s ATM.

The 34-year-old Emirati officer who worked for the police patrol division of the Dubai Police was on security patrol duty near a shopping mall on Dubai-Al Ain Road on April 25 when a Pakistani vendor approached him and handed him a wallet he had found at a petrol station.

The wallet contained Dh70 personal ID bank cards and other important documents of a Bangladeshi worker.

The police officer allegedly took out the ATM card from the wallet and withdrew Dh5000 from an ATM.

He also admitted during investigations that after withdrawing the money he threw the wallet with all the cards in a garbage bin.

The Pakistani vendor 24 who had found the wallet lying on the floor at a petrol station said that he handed it to the police officer.

“I asked an employee there whether he knew anything about the wallet or its owner.

“I gave him my mobile number to give it to the person who comes to the petrol station looking for the wallet.

“But then I decided to give it to the police.”

A Bangladeshi worker 22 said that he lost his wallet when he used the washroom inside the petrol station in the Nad Al Sheba area. “I had to shell out Dh8095 altogether for applying for a new labour health and ATM cards as well as my driving licence.”

He was told to go to the Bur Dubai police station where he gave his statement.

He was summoned again to the police station about one month later when the vendor identified the police officer.

A police lieutenant said that with the help of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers they learnt that it was the police corporal who withdrew Dh5000 by using the worker’s bank card.
