Kerry Cites Progress in Iran Talks

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Enna July 16 (QNA) - After three days of intensive talks with his Iranian counterpart Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that "tangible progress" had been made in negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and that he would return to Washington to consult with US President Obama over whether to extend a Sunday deadline for a final agreement.

Kerry said that "very real gaps" remained but his tone and his acknowledgment that Iran had complied with all of its commitments under a temporary agreement that took effect in January left little doubt he wanted to extend the talks by weeks or months.

"There are more issues to work through and more provisions to nail down to ensure that Iran's program will always remain exclusively peaceful. So we are going to continue to work...with the belief that there is a way forward" he said.

Kerry said Tuesday that Iran's current 19000 centrifuges were "too many." US officials have urged a significant reduction in Iran's enrichment capacity.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told (New York Times) newspaper that his country is offering to hold off from expanding its uranium-enrichment program for about seven years. (QNA)
