Zimbabwe's trade deficit dips 25.7 percent in H1

(MENAFN) Zimbabwe's trade deficit dropped 25.7 percent to USD1.76 billion in the first half of 2014, down from USD2.37 billion registered in the same period a year ago, Xinhua reported.

Imports totaled USD2.99 billion, down from USD3.92 billion last year, while exports were at USD1.22 billion, USD1.54 billion lower than 2013, figures by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency showed.

Economists at Zimstats predict that trade deficit would close the year lower at USD3.2 billion from USD3.5 billion last year.

However, the narrowing gap was mainly contributed to depressed demand and liquidity challenges rather than a boost in manufacturing.
