France welcomes UN resolution on channelling aid to Syrians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The French government on Tuesday said it welcomed the adoption on July 14 of UN Security Council resolution 2165 which provides a mechanism to channelling humanitarian aid to Syria's beleaguered populations, battered by more than three years of war and deprivation.

The UNSC resolution aims to get help to areas that have been blocked from receiving humanitarian aid by the Syrian regime.

The resolution authorises humanitarian supplies to transit into Syria from Turkey, Jordan and Iraq through four border crossings, bringing to six the number of border crossings being used for aid transfers.

"This resolution is a response to the systematic refusal of the Syrian regime to allow humanitarian workers access to zones that are not under its control," a French statement said.

The French Foreign Ministry said that there are five million Syrians in those areas, living in extremely precarious conditions.

France said the latest resolution will complete an earlier UNSC text (Resolution 2139) that was voted to protect against the bombing of civilian zones and to require the lifting of sieges of populated areas where civilians were trapped.

"France calls on all parties to implement this (latest) resolution in the shortest time frame," the statement said.

Paris also urged a UN control mechanism to be set up without delay to monitor compliance and oversee the loading of humanitarian supplies destined for Syria.
