If you’re a Bollywood horror fan you might want to check out this weekend’s release - Pizza - starring Akshay Oberoi and Parvathy Omanakuttan who claim it’s “as experimental as a film can get”. The duo dropped into the Khaleej Times office yesterday to promote their new project a remake of the Tamil hit of the same name.

The story revolves around Kunal a pizza delivery boy who is sent on a delivery to a house that holds some dark secrets and what transpires thereafter. Akshay who plays Kunal appears menacing in parts of the trailer but it remains to be seen whether he’s the one with evil intent or there’s something else afoot. Akshay did not divulge a lot of details but expressed hope that the audiences would get more than what they bargained for from the film.

When quizzed on what the difference was between the Tamil and Hindi versions Akshay said “The skeleton is similar but the story has been tweaked for Bollywood audiences - those with heightened sensibilities not mainstream audiences.”

He added that the film wasn’t a typical horror film with sound effects and special effects as its USP. “While sound effects do play a huge role the focus is on the story which is very strong. It’s a thriller that has elements of horror in it.”

Former Miss India Parvathy admitted she does not want to be tagged as “just another model doing Bollywood films.”

“I have always loved watching films and I don’t want to be stuck in a safe zone; I’d rather do something that gives me peace as an actor” she told City Times when asked why she chose this particular role. “I’m not just a pretty face which is what my director and co-stars felt I was at the beginning and I was happy to be able to change that perception.”

Both actors admit the film is a small one both budget and actor-wise and hope audiences give it a chance. “I’ve always been interested in Bollywood. Some people are lucky enough to get big launches with renowned producers and a lot of media hype; that’s what everyone wants but if you don’t get it you should make an effort to do something interesting and not just serve old wine in a new bottle” said Akshay.

Parvathy added “In fact everyone in this film wants to do something different even for 3D effects we’ve used the kind of cameras used in the Hobbit. We’ve left no stone unturned in our efforts.” Both actors admitted to City Times they are (oddly) not particular fans of horror films in general. Those heading to the cinemas this weekend would obviously want to know if the ending is something that ties everything up neatly or leaves one somewhat in suspense. “It is a bit ambiguous at the end but it does give you the answers you’re looking for” said Akshay not quite answering the question. Pizza is produced by UTV and releases this weekend in the UAE; it also stars Arunoday Singh and Dipannita Sharma. Read the entire interview in City Times soon.
