(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt, part of its contacts with Israelis and Palestinians, launched an initiative Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza aimed at stopping bloodshed among the Palestinian people thus alleviating their suffering.
The initiative is part of Egypt's intensive efforts over the past two weeks with regional and international parties to stop the killing of the Palestinian people in Gaza by halting the Israeli offensive on the enclave, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Egypt, it added, believed the success of this initiative coupled with halt of all hostile activities would contribute to creating suitable atmosphere to resume serious negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis in line with UN resolutions.
Egypt said the negotiations should honor aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Israeli offensive on Gaza has so far killed at least 180 people and injured over 1,280 others.
