Omani engineer authors book on speech recognition

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Authored by an Omani telecom expert, a book on speech recognition has been published by Lambert Academic Publishing (Germany).

The book titled, Speech Recognition for Arabic Language has been authored by Ali Zahran Salim al Bimani, who is a team leader at Omantel's mobile network maintenance unit in Muscat, stated a press release.

He holds a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). Bimani wrote the book under guidance of his supervisor Dr Tariq Jamil, an assistant professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at SQU for the past 14 years and who has presented over 50 papers in journals.

Dr Jamil said that the book is among the first scientific works on speech recognition for the Arabic language using a fully-diacritised corpus of an Arabic book, Sahih al Bukhari, one of the six most trusted compilations of hadith, the sayings and deeds of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). According to a study in the book, diacritised corpus provides a higher degree of accuracy in speech recognition compared to Romanised corpus for Arabic and this can serve as a first step towards developing more accurate Arabic speech recognition systems, added the release.
