UN warns Iraqi parliament not to delay election or risk plunging country into chaos

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN urged on Saturday Iraq to move quickly in forming a government and not risk plunging the country into chaos.

In a statement, UN Secretary General's Iraq Representative Nickolay Mladenov warned Iraqi politicians that "failure to move forward on electing a new speaker, a new president and a new government risks plunging the country into chaos.

"It will only serve the interests of those who seek to divide the people of Iraq and destroy their chances for peace and prosperity," Mladenov said.

"If serious solutions to the current problems are not found, then all political leaders will have to share their responsibility for failing to act with the necessary sense of duty at a time of crisis," Mladenov added.

The UN official noted that Iraq needs a team capable of bringing people together, not accuse each other, adding that it is the right time to move forward and reach an understanding to best serve the interest of Iraqi people.

Mladenov also said that having a viable parliament would enable the country to combat terrorism and energize the political process.

Iraqi MPs are to hold a session Sunday aimed at reviving flagging efforts to form a government in the face of a jihadist-led militant offensive, which has overrun large areas of five provinces since it began on June 9.

The previous session of parliament earlier this month ended in mayhem, with MPs trading heckles and threats.
