US welcomes election of Syrian National Coalition Pres.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Department of State on Wednesday welcomed the election of Hadi al Bahra as new president of opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) in Istanbul last night, saying the US looks forward to working with him in order to build partnership with the Coalition.

"We applaud Coalition President-elect al Bahra's longstanding efforts in support of the Syrian people and his distinguished service to the Coalition," said Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki in a statement.

In addition to the new President the SNC elected three new vice presidents and a new secretary-general.

Psaki noted that the US looks forward to working with al Bahra and "other new leaders to reach out to all Syrian communities and to strengthen unity amongst moderate opposition institutions." "The coalition has given a voice to all Syrians who have been oppressed by the regime for decades," Psaki affirmed.

The US remains, "committed to supporting the Coalition as it continues working on behalf of the Syrian people to fulfill the Syrian revolution's goals of freedom and dignity for all Syrians."
