Kerry Warns of Any Attempt to Seize Power Illegally in Afghanistan

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kyo July 08 (QNA) - Secretary of State John Kerry warned Tuesday that any attempt to seize power illegally in Afghanistan would lead to the cessation of US financial and security support.

During his stopover in Tokyo en route to Beijing Kerry expressed deep concern about reports of protests in Afghanistan noting that Washington is waiting for the Afghan electoral institutions to conduct a full and thorough review of all reasonable allegations of irregularities.

"Serious allegations of fraud have been raised and have yet to be adequately investigated" State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

Kerry called on all Afghan leaders to maintain calm to protect the progress that has been made during the last decade and maintain the trust on the people.

Preliminary results of the Afghan presidential elections announced yesterday Monday showed the former finance minister Ashraf Ghani won over his rival Abdullah Abdullah by a wide margin. Washington has described the results as unreliable. (QNA)
