(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) opened a resident office in Bangui, capital of Central African Republic, to conduct and supervise relief programmes in coordination with Central Africa Red Cross.
This follows a cooperation agreement signed during the QRC mission's assessment visit in April. The office will intervene in three areas to help the population affected by the countrywide violence wave until studies for more projects in other areas are finalised.
The first aspect of intervention is to build a town for internally displaced people (IDP) in Moyen Sido, 270km north of Bangui, towards the Chad borders, as a sheltering and relief centre for homeless IDP and a motivation for refugees in neighbouring countries to return home. Efforts will be coordinated with partners and NGOs. Second, healthcare is one of the priorities to monitor and improve health conditions of patients; prevent epidemics and communicable diseases such as malaria, measles, and cholera; eliminate the deficit in medical workers at hospitals and mobile clinics; and open and operate health centres in affected regions.
Finally, there is the water and sanitation scope, complementary to the IDP town. The town will be provided with clean drinking water and a liquid disinfection network to ensure environmental safety and mitigate the suffering of IDP.
Preparations are under way to open a branch of the office in Kabo in the north, which is near the Moyen Sido town, to oversee implementation of projects.
In March, QRC issued an emergency appeal, followed by a six-month fundraiser under the theme 'Save Your Brothers in Central Africa.'
As the first Arab humanitarian organisation to reach distressed regions, QRC's initiative inspired other organisations to take action to help IDP and communities at risk of siege, displacement, and intimidation weather their severe situation.
The programme was incorporated into QRC's Ramadan 1435 AH campaign, launched under the theme 'You Donation Is Their Lifeline,' with QR7,355,000 worth of projects, including refugee food packages (QR495,000), IDP food packages (QR1,080,000), primary healthcare (QR3,300,000), nonfood items (QR570,000), family tents (QR1,850,000), and family hygiene kits (QR60,000).
