(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Oman's four-member women crew onboard Al Thuraya returned home with loads of experience after competing at the J80 European Championship that concluded at the El Balis waterfront in Barcelona, Spain on Friday.
Skippered by Raja'a al Owaisi, the crew included two more Omani sailors in Nashwa al Kindi and Ibtisam al Salmi, and was joined by British Olympian Mary Rook, who is also the team coach and mentor.
Al Thuraya finished a modest 47th among a world-class field of 52 teams from ten different countries. The Omani team's best show was in the opening race when they came 12th. In the remaining nine races, the Al Thuraya team's best finish was 42nd.
The Oman Sail crew garnered a total of 428.8 points, with a nett tally of 375.8 points. The French team of EV Cataschool, skippered by Quentin Delapierre, won the J80 European crown with a total of 59 points (32 nett points).
France's Interface Concept and Spain's Factor Energia came second and third, respectively. The Barcelona event also concluded the four-month campaign for the Omani trio, which began competitive sailing in April with the Spi Ouest France Intermarche and was followed by the Grand Prix Ecole Navale in June and the Normandy Week.
Team coach Mary said, ''The aim of racing in Europe was to give the girls more experience of a wide range of venues and conditions.''
