(MENAFN - The Peninsula) The Solar System Exhibition, one of the highlights of Katara Ramadan Festival this year, opened yesterday at Katara Building 18.

Since it launched the festival on Thursday, Katara has witnessed many visitors coming to expos and lectures and participating in competitions and other activities under the theme 'Katara Bridging Quran and Astronomy.'

The exhibition features a replica of the solar system, highlighting Venus, Jupiter, Neptune, Mars, Sun, Saturn, Uranus, Earth and Mercury in their orbits.

It provides visitors with real life experience of the solar system and intensive information about the planets, including their size, location and proportion.

Other expos are 'The Holy Quran and Astronomy,' 'Astrolabe Exhibition,' and 'Galaxies Gallery.'

As part of the festival, Katara has collaborated with Qatar Charity to host religious lectures every Sunday by a cleric.

Lectures are held at Katara Mosque after the Taraweeh prayers and continue until end of Ramadan.

Starting tonight, Katara is giving telescope enthusiasts a chance to see the stars, and know more about them.

The event is free for all visitors from 8pm until midnight every night until the end of Ramadan.

A fine art competition was launched on Saturday, in which artists may submit artworks on the subject Quran, astronomy or both.

An expert panel will choose the winners who will be announced on July 25.

The top three winners will receive QR15,000, QR10,000 and QR5,000.

Also on Saturday, the Yemeni Amassi Band staged their final performance at Katara Drama Theatre.

Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, honoured the band that performed religious songs for three nights.
