575000 displaced persons registered in Pakistan

With more people pouring in from the north waziristan agency to escape the ongoing military operation against taleban militants the number of registered internally displace persons (idps) has reached 575000.

Commissioner of bannu syed mohsin ali held a media briefing on friday to share the details of ongoing relief efforts for the idps in the wake of operation ‘zarb-i-azb’.

The commissioner said that three registration points were established for the people coming from different areas of north waziristan adding that the supply of food and other necessities has already begun in the area.

He said that 50 trucks from punjab government and 20 trucks from imran khan foundation of relief goods have also arrived for the idps. so far 575000 people have been registered ali said adding that more than 28000 families have already received financial assistance. aid was coming from all over the country to facilitate relief efforts he said.

An army officer brig. aftab also spoke to the media on the occasion and said that the military had already distributed food rations to 70 per cent of the families. “at least 40000 families have received ration” the military official said adding that “in the coming days the baka khel camp would be transformed into a model camp.”

Brig. aftab said 11 centres have been established for the distribution of relief goods and ration amongst the displaced families.

He said a ration bag weighing 110kg is being given to each family. five thousand ration bags are being distributed daily in the camps. so far ration has been distributed amongst 44000 families. free of cost sims are being given to the displaced families for distribution of relief goods.

Brig. aftab said vocational institutes have been set up for the training of women. he said schools and parks are also being established for the children.

He said 3779 affectees have been provided with medical treatment.

Pakistan launched zarb-i-azb a long-awaited military offensive aimed at eliminating taleban militants from their stronghold in the north waziristan tribal district in june following a brazen attack on the country’s busiest airport in karachi.

The operation involving air strikes tanks and heavy artillery has forced the exodus of a large number of people mainly to the nearby town of bannu just outside the tribal zone.

On its 15th day a new phase of the offensive began with the military launching a ground operation in miramshah — the main town of north waziristan.

Meanwhile outlawed tehreek-e-taleban pakistan (ttp) leader mullah fazlullah is currently in the tribal regions of pakistan and not in afghanistan as claimed by pakistani officials the militant outfit has claimed. islamabad maintains that fazlullah is based in the kunar province of afghanistan and has sought from afghanistan the extradition of the ttp chief as well as the dismantling of what it calls the militant outfit’s longstanding hideouts in kunar and nooristan provinces.

Speaking to the bbc ttp spokesperson shahidullah shahid said that fazlullah was not under the influence of the afghan government even when he was in afghanistan and added that the ttp has never been aided by any government.
