CBI ready to take Kerala child trafficking probe

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The central bureau of investigation (cbi) has expressed its readiness to take up the probe into alleged trafficking of 586 children from north and eastern states to orphanages in kerala

The decision was conveyed to the high court when a petition seeking a high level probe into the incident came for hearing on wednesday. the premier investigating agency was earlier impleaded in the case as a respondent by a division bench comprising chief justice manjula chellur and justice p.r ramachandra menon. The bench has appointed advocate devan ramachandran as amicus curie to help the court in the case. advocate general k p dandapani submitted the progress report of the investigation conducted by the crime branch so far. the court will consider the case again on july 8.The state government was not in favour of a cbi probe into the incident as it believed the transportation of the children from jharkhand bihar and west bengal involved only procedural lapses. the court however suspected involvement of a high-level racket behind the trafficking. The court viewed it as a serious matter with inter-state ramifications and therefore favoured a federal agency to probe all the aspects of the case. the judges observed that the court was “the custodian and guardians of the children” and it could not ignore their welfare. the court has also suo motu impleaded state governments of jharkhand bihar and west bengal as well as the railway ministry in the case. The trafficking came to light when the railway protection force detained the children without tickets at the palghat railway station. subsequent investigation revealed that the children were brought to fill some orphanages in calicut and malappuram districts under the guise of providing the children better education. Most of the 586 children brought to the state have returned to their respective states. the jharkhand government has promised to set up special schools for the children.
