Canada donates USD 4.5 mln to the needy in Sudan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN World Food Program announced on Tuesday it has received a donation of USD 4.5 million from the Canadian government to support the Program's efforts in Sudan

The Program's regional director Adnan Khan said in a press statement, "We are grateful to the Canadian government for their donation and we consider Canada a strategic partner in the global fight against malnutrition and hunger in Sudan." He further emphasized that the donation "could not have come at a more opportune time to support our efforts at dealing with hunger and malnutrition affecting so many people in Sudan who are suffering mostly as a result of political strife in many parts of the country." There are over two million children who suffer annually from malnutrition in Sudan

Ambassador Dominique Rossetti, ChargØ£© d'affaires at the Canadian embassy in Khartoum said his country had good experiences with the UN World Food Program and underlined that while Canada was very far from Sudan, Canadian nevertheless would not ignore the suffering of people no matter where they were. "Giving humanitarian aid is part and parcel of our values," he said

The Program aims to reach in 2014 no less than 4.1 million needy people throughout Sudan, at least 3.2 million in conflict-ridden Darfur
