UNRWA unable to deliver aid to besieged Palestinian refugees in Syria for month

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN Relief and Works Agency for the Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said Tuesday it was unable, for a month, to distribute humanitarian items to Yarmouk Camp, Syria

"Last time the UNRWA was able to distribute aid was a month ago," the UNRWA-Damascus office said in a press release, pointing out that some 18,000 besieged civilians in the Camp are suffering "harsh" conditions

Aid traffic has been intermitting to the 2.1-square-kilometre Camp, which became the scene of intense fighting between Syrian pro-government and opposition forces

On June 22, Director of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's political bureau, Ambassador Anwar Abdulhadi said an initiative was signed to evacuate the Camp from weapon and gunmen and end the suffering of the families there. The initiative was sponsored by the Syrian state and the Palestinian Liberation organization (PLO)

On May 31, Director General of the General Authority for Palestinian Refugees in Syria, Ali Mustafa announced that local and international relief organizations resumed food aid operations to the Camp
