US to Send 200 Additional Troops to Iraq


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Shington july 01 (qna) - us president barack obama on monday ordered another contingent of combat-ready troops to iraq to protect american property and citizens stepping up the us military's presence in the country



the new deployments will bring to about 700 the number of us troops in iraq the pentagon said including in security and training roles

"in light of the security situation in baghdad i have ordered up to approximately 200 additional us armed forces personnel to iraq to reinforce security at the us embassy its support facilities and the baghdad international airport" obama said in a letter to lawmakers



the latest deployment comes on top of 275 us military personnel sent earlier this month to provide security for the us embassy and other personnel in the country. in addition obama has ordered as many as 300 members of us special-operations forces to assess "how we can best train advise and support iraqi security forces going forward" obama said two weeks ago



the pentagon said the 200 additional us forces arrived in baghdad on sunday. the deployment includes helicopters and drones to help provide security for americans traveling in iraq. at the same time the pentagon is sending another 100 personnel into baghdad to provide security and logistics support

"this force will remain in iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed" obama said. (qn
