Four candidates to contest post of EP President

According to an EP statement today, the candidates, proposed for the first ballot either by a political group or by a minimum of 40 MEPs, are: Pablo Iglesias of Spain for the European United Left, Nordic Green Left, Sajjad Karim of the UK for European Conservatives and Reformists, Ulrike Lunacek of Austria for Greens/European Free Alliance, and Martin Schulz of Germany for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrat



After the candidates' brief statements, the election will be held by secret ballo



MEPs vote by indicating their preferred candidate on a paper ballot. To be elected, a candidate must win an absolute majority of the valid votes cast, or 50 percent plus one. The EP has 751 member



The new EP President is elected for a two and a half year term
