(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Aiming at encouraging enterprises to practise high standard in the field occupational safety and health, Qatar Chamber (QC), the largest industry representative body, yesterday announced its plan to launch a book on "The country's achievements on occupational safety" by next April
The book will be launched in collaboration with Sougha for advertising and organising exhibitions and conferences that will be attended by a large number of state senior officials, businessmen and senior managers of construction and oil companies both local and international
During the inauguration ceremony of the book, Awards of Excellence are to be given to institutions proven to be distinct in the field of occupational health and safety. The initiative would encourage enterprises and individuals to excellence in compliance with the requirements and standards of occupational safety and health, in addition to reduction of accident rates and work-related injurie
The move also aims at creating an environment of competition in this field and encouraging interest in the safety of the work environment and health of the workforce in Qatar. Awards will be allocated to the best Safety consultant, Safety Award for the best contractor in the large companies category, the best contractor for mid-sized companies and the award for the best workers in the safety field
Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani (pictured), Chairman of QC, said that the state is witnessing significant economic growth, which requires the help of large numbers of skilled workforce, especially when Qatar has taken upon itself to adhere to the highest quality standards in the production and delivery of services in accordance with international labour standards
He added: "The need of Qatar in attracting workers comes in light of the giant development projects being implemented and which need thousands of workers to help implementing them. It is an incumbent on the state to take care of these workers and protect them, so as to contribute positively in the renaissance and the development in Qatar. The government is well aware that work-related incidents and injuries cause huge losses to the global economy, noting that it is estimated that the costs of these accidents and injuries is about four percent of the global GDP
He stressed that the awareness of applying the requirements and the right specifications of occupational safety and health in the workplace and workers housing has seen a remarkable increase during the last period, noting that the National Committee for Safety and Health has been recently established with the aim of raising awareness to the standards and requirements for occupational safety and health and to ensure that they are optimally respected
He noted: "QC is sparing no effort to help the government find formulas and appropriate regulations that protect workers in Qatar, as well as all the professions that require protection and safety of personal and professional from accidents at workplace.
