Qatar- Rota grocery packs for 200 families

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Sixty volunteers gathered at Qatar's Table Tennis Federation on Saturday as part of Reach Out To Asia (Rota) Ramadan 2014 Project to pack groceries for 200 local needy familie

Groceries included pasta, cooking oil, flour, lentils and milk powder they will distribute directly to the families this week

"Volunteering with Rota is refreshing; you meet new people and learn more about others," said Fatma Al Khater, a volunteer from Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) Qatar, the project's exclusive sponsor

"It is great to see volunteers of different ages and backgrounds come together and work as a team. There is something about people coming together for a common good. On an individual level, volunteers will take this initiative forward with them.

The grocery packing and distribution activity marks the start of 'Sharing Blessings', Rota's eighth annual Ramadan Project, which has engaged hundreds of volunteers in Qatar over the years, helping thousands of beneficiaries, and becoming one of Qatar's most recognised volunteer efforts supporting the local community during the holy month

"Each year I am heartened to see Rota volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come out to support their neighbours in need," said Rota's Acting Executive Director, Mohamed Al Naama

"For us, the Holy Month of Ramadan is about giving people in Qatar opportunities to give back to the community that has given them so much. The grocery packing activity marks the start of a busy and richly rewarding month for Rota's volunteers, who embody the values of volunteerism and community service. I am excited to watch our annual Ramadan volunteer project reach new heights and am grateful for the support of our sponsor QXY Qatar.

Rota's Volunteer Programme works with Social Development Centre (SDC), and Qatar Foundation's Facilities Management Directorate to benefit from their expertise and maximise the local reach and impact of Rota's Ramadan 2014 Projec

To support the grocery packing and distribution activity, for example, SDC and Rota worked in partnership to identify local needy families

The activity forms part of Rota's Ramadan 2014 volunteer effort which will serve and support important community partners, including Rumailah Hospital's Children's Rehabilitation Centre and Residential Care Compound, Hamad Hospital's Paediatric Leukaemia Unit, and Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care
