Omantel appoints Talal al Mamari as new CEO


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Omantel's board of directors announced the appointment of Talal Said Marhoon al Mamari as new chief executive officer with effect from Sunday, June 29. 

Mamari replaces Dr Amer Awadh al Rawas who has decided to move to the oil and gas sector as CEO of one of the companies involved in the enhancement of oil production and preserving the environment surrounding oil output operations.

The board of directors earlier approved the succession plan for senior executive roles within the company to ensure business continuity in the case of any ­senior executive role falling ­vacant, said a press release on Sunday.

Prior to his appointment as Omantel's CEO, Mamari held the position of chief financial officer of Omantel, with the responsibility of preserving and creating shareholder value for the company's investors. Mamari chairs several internal committees and teams and is on the boards of various companies and investment funds.

Mamari played an instrumental role in Omantel's initial public offering in 2005 and in the integration of the company's mobile and fixed operations and later in the full legal merger of Oman Mobile with Omantel. Mamari also led Omantel's credit rating process by Moody's (A3) and Standard & Poors (BBB+/A-2), which led to the enhancement of investors' trust in the company.

Commenting on the appointment, H E Engineer Sultan bin Hamdoon al Harthi, chairman of Omantel's board of directors, said, ''Mamari possesses the capabilities and skills needed to lead the company in the next phase and we are confident, as the board of directors, of his ability to work closely with the executive team and other stakeholders to realise the company's strategy and objectives.''

''The board of directors wishes in this regard to record its thanks and appreciation for the great efforts and achievements made by Dr Rawas in a very critical period for the company during his tenure as CEO, especially in leading the integration of mobile and fixed operations in one entity and growing the company's network share, which led to enhancing investors' confidence and increasing Omantel's market capitalisation.''

Mamari will continue to build on the achievements made in the past few years and to ensure Omantel's leadership of the telecom market in the sultanate. Commenting on his appointment, Mamari said, ''I'm honored to be appointed as Omantel chief executive and I look forward to working closely with the executive team to ensure maintaining the Omantel leadership in the next phase.''
