S. Korea's President Rejects Prime Minister's Resignation

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Oul june 26 (qna) - south korean president park geun-hye will keep her current prime minister chung hong-won who offered to resign and take responsibility for the deadly ferry sinking in april.

the presidential office announced on thursday that park has returned hong-won's resignation offer.

presidential public relations senior secretary yoon doo-hyun told reporters in a briefing that park made the decision as she could no longer let the vacuum continue.

he said that the president promised to reform the nation and build a safer korea following the maritime disaster but due to issues exposed ahead of confirmation hearings the country is divided. he added that the president asked chung to continue his devotion according to (kbs world).

the decision comes after park's second choice for the next prime minister gave up his candidacy on tuesday amid intense political debate over his qualifications. her first prime minister nominee also resigned late last month following accusations that he made a large income after retiring from public service.

the president initially said she would accept chung's resignation but only after he handled the deadly sinking of the sewol ferry. park however changed her mind two months after chung's offer to resign.

it is the first time in the nation's constitutional history that a prime minister's resignation has been returned.

amid mounting criticisms over its repeated failure to find a new prime minister the top office also said that it will create a new senior secretarial office in charge of personnel matters.

the new office will from now on lead efforts in finding and screening nominees for government posts. (qna)
