US welcomes parliamentary elections in Libya


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Department of State welcomes the parliamentary elections held in Libya by the High National Electoral Council on Wednesday, Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf said. The electoral council announced that 1.5 million voters registered and had to chance to cast their ballot. Harf told reporters: "There are 1,600 polling centers around the country. They'll be electing 200 members of the new Council of Representatives. Obviously credible elections are an important part of any country's transition here, and this would be an important step for Libyans as well." The US has provided, "support and assistance to Libyan civil society organizations that have fielded domestic observers, also have funded technical support for the electoral council, in coordination with the U.N. and other international partners as well." According to Harf there are no results as of yet.
