CPM students leader held for defaming Indian Prime Minister


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The police had earlier arrested nine students and let them off on bail for using �objectionable and unsavoury� language in a crossword puzzle in the magazine against modi.

the kerala police on tuesday arrested a central committee member of the students federation of india student wing of communist party of india (marxist) in connection with the publication of a college magazine with defamatory contents against prime minister narendra modi.

p g subindas was arrested and charged under section 153 of the indian penal code (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) as he was a member of the magazine advisory committee at the sree krishna college guruvayoor. he was later released on bail.

the police had earlier arrested nine students and let them off on bail for using “objectionable and unsavoury” language in a crossword puzzle in the magazine against modi. the puzzle asks if namo is nayinte mon (‘dog’s son’ in malayalam) who is namo the answer keys included the letters “mo” and a picture of modi.

the puzzle also contained defamatory contents against state chief minister oommen chandy congress vice-president rahul gandhi party mp shashi tharoor as well as spiritual leader mata amrithanandamayi. faced with legal action and protests from various quarters the college authorities withdrew the campus magazine.

chief editor of the campus magazine and college principal d jayaprasad was spared by the police after he explained that the controversial crossword was finalised without his and the staff editor’s consent. he said it was published without his knowledge and permission.

this was the second such case reported from the area after the campus magazine of a polytechnic college featured pm modi in the list of “negative faces” along with adolf hitler osama bin laden george bush and a few others.

the principal and a few students of the polytechnic college were arrested and released on bail last week after police had charged them under the same sections of the indian penal code. the police also raided the polytechnic college and seized 392 copies of the magazine a computer and hard discs of the designers of the magazine.
